2000 The Vintage
As Oregon Wine Magazine exclaimed, “Three’s a Charm!” Along with the years 1998 and 1999, the harvest of 2000 continued a trend of yielding exceptional fruit. Marked by mild, dry weather in the spring and summer, and temperate weather in the Fall, the 2000 season was a winner!
2000 Marechal Foch
Marechal Foch is a French-American hybrid varietal named after the famed World War 1 field marshal by a loyal French-Canadian vitologist. It produces a deep, red wine in regions which otherwise could not provide reds, such as the Finger Lakes district in New York and Michigan. By happy circumstance, Foch also grows particularly well in Oregon.
An earlier ripening grape, our Marechal Foch was harvested in late September, 2000 from Meadows Vineyard. De-stemmed and lightly crushed, the wine was vinified and 780 gallons entered the barrels on October 12. The wine was barrel aged until August 15, 2001, received a coarse filtration, and bottled September 12, 2001.
Although visually similar to a big Bordeaux red, Marechal Foch is neither Bordeaux or Burgundian. Instead, it offers a sensory experience all its own with its unique labrusca bouquet, flavor hints of figs and prunes, and a full yet crisp mouth feel. Pair this wine as you would any red, with hearty dishes. It goes particularly well with lamb, venison, and fowl; especially roast duck.
